Sony A7CR - Why this beats the Nikon Z8

I’ve ben using the Nikon Z8 for what seems like years. It really is the perfect camera in so many ways.

Sensor size hits the sweet spot and it’s ultra responsive.

Even better is the shutter. It’s the best I’ve ever used - because there isn’t one.

The sensor is excellent, the menus are excellent and it’s absolutely silent with no sensor warping

Every time I pick it up I think to myself that it’s the perfect camera (I do sometimes wish it had raw pre-capture, but then I have to remind myself I’ve never actually used this function).

So what’s the problem ?

At one of my photo workshops, a guy brought in a Sony A7CR.

It was TINY. And the sensor was HUGE

It was nimble and fast.

I tried it for an afternoon, and discovered the joys of one handed shooting using the rear LCD rather than the view finder.

With the right lens you can wander around all day, snapping with one hand.

And this is why the Z8 can’t compare. It’s too big and heavy.

The new Z mount allows for some fantastic lenses, but they’re quite a bit bigger than Sony e-mount comparators.

So kit yourself out with an A7CR and the 40mm 2.5G and you’ll find yourself taking it everywhere.

And having a decent camera with you all the time is half the battle in becoming a good photographer.
